Company History:

Wabisa Mutual shares much of its history with Canada, having come into existence a mere twenty days following confederation.  On the 20th of July 1867 a meeting was held in the Walpole town hall to organize a mutual fire insurance company.  The appointment of agents was first on the agenda of this meeting, and upon appointment, the agents were to receive fifty cents for each application they had approved, while the secretary received a full dollar on each policy issued.

The first policy issued was to Jacob Sherk that same day, for the West half of Lot 16 Concession 3, Walpole township.  The total coverage for the policy was $1,070.00 including $260.00 for hay, and grain, as well as $400.00 for the farm house.

Wabisa had humble beginnings but grew quickly, issuing 164 policies in its first year with no losses to report, although one policy was cancelled.  At the end of the year the board of directors voted to award an honorarium of $2.50 to each director for the year's work, and the secretary received a remuneration of $165.00.

Things continued steadily for Wabisa until 1970 when the 'Walpole Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company', and 'Saltfleet and Binbrook Mutual Fire Insurance Company' amalgameted to form the Wabisa of today.  It was here that the name Wabisa originated, Wa- for Walpole, Bi- for Binbrook, and Sa- for Saltfleet.  The amalgamation officially took place on January 1st 1970.
